  2022 SWAC FOOTBALL NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Jarveon Howard, Alcorn State,...Howard was named SWAC Newcomer of the Week twice this past season. He leads the league in rushing yards (1,273) while ranking fourth in scoring (78 points). He ranks tied for 20th in the FCS with 12 rushing touchdowns and is also currently ranked eighth in the FCS in rushing yards. Howard rushed for a season-high 299 yards and four touchdowns against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He tallied 199 yards and a score on the ground in his debut against No. 10 Stephen F. Austin.   Andrew Smith's 50-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter lifted Alcorn State to a 17-14 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday. Jalon Jones' 9-yard touchdown run and his 10-yard scoring pass to Kemari Averett in the second half had rallied the Wildcats (5-5, 4-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference) to a 14-10 lead before Smith's pick-six of Jones with 4:39 remaining. Bethune-Cookman's fourth lost fumble ended the Wildcats' final possession. Jarveon Howard rushed for 129 yards on 32 carries with a touchdown for the Braves (2-8, 3-4). Jones was 22 of 34 for 228 yards passing. The Wildcats left their Daytona Beach campus on Wednesday because of the possible threat and disruption of Hurricane Nicole.   Jarveon Howard had 125 yards rushing that included a touchdown run in overtime and Alcorn State beat Prairie View A&M 23-16 on Friday night. Javonta Leatherwood's 5-yard touchdown run for Alcorn State tied the game 16-16 with 6:48 remaining. Howard scored on a 2-yard run to open the extra period before Tavarian McCullum intercepted a Trazon Connley pass to end it. Alcorn State (4-5, 3-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference) ended a three-game losing streak and has won the last five meetings against Prairie View A&M (5-4, 4-2). Connley threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Colbey Washington and added a 20-yard TD run in the third quarter that gave the Panthers a 13-9 lead. Connley was 13 of 36 for 142 yards passing and finished with 38 yards rushing. Jaden Stewart added 94 yards on the ground.   SEPT 26 SWAC FOOTBALL CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER/NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Alcorn State's Jarveon Howard rushed for a career-high 299 yards rushing on 23 carries, adding four touchdowns on the ground. He averaged 13 yards per carry for the game and also caught one pass for two yards.   SEPT 5 SWAC FOOTBALL NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Alcorn State's Jarveon Howard tallied a game-high 199 yards on the ground during the Braves near-upset of 10th-ranked Stephen F. Austin. The Columbia, Mississippi native had a 73-yard rushing score just before the half that extended the Braves lead at 24-10 going into intermission.   Jarveon Howard rushed for three touchdowns and Alcorn State cruised past Mississippi Valley State 30-7 on Saturday night. Howard's first touchdown run gave Alcorn State (3-2, 2-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) a 7-0 first-quarter lead. Howard had a go-ahead touchdown run in the second quarter to put the Braves up 14-7 at halftime. The score was set up after the Braves recovered a fumble by MVSU (0-6, 0-3) quarterback Jamari Jones at the Delta Devils' 19-yard line. Noah Kiani's 30-yard field goal stretched Alcorn State's lead to 17-7 just 12 seconds into the fourth quarter. Howard added his third touchdown run and the Braves' final tally came on a scoop-and-score fumble return with a little over a minute left in the game. Bolar, Alcorn State,...Bolar, a 6-1, 190-pound senior wide receiver from Purvis, Mississippi, made an instant impact for the Braves in his first season with the program. After transferring into Alcorn at the end of the 2019 campaign, he was sidelined for the duration of the 2020-21 athletic year due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. In his first playing season for the Purple and Gold in fall of 2021, the former Vanderbilt Commodore finished the season 10th in the league with 668 receiving yards (16.7 yards/reception) and five touchdowns.   2022 PRESEASON ALL-SWAC SECOND TEAM: Running Back: Niko Duffey, Alcorn State,...Duffey, a 5-11, 175-pound junior running back from Tampa, Florida, finished the 2021 campaign ranked fourth in the SWAC with 805 rushing yards (73.2 yards/game) and four touchdowns on his way to being voted to the All-SWAC Second Team Offense at the end of the season. The Jefferson High product also stepped out of the backfield to post 18 receptions for 181 yards and one touchdown. Throughout the campaign, Duffey had a string of three consecutive games in which he eclipsed 100 yards rushing in contests against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (142 yds), Grambling State (138 yds) and Mississippi Valley State (138 yds), respectfully.   2022 PRESEASON ALL-SWAC SECOND TEAM: Linebacker: Claudin Cherelus, Alcorn State,...Cherelus, a 6-2, 195-pound senior from Naples, Florida, is earning all-conference preseason recognition for the first time in his Braves career in being selected to the Preseason All-SWAC Second Team Defense as a linebacker. The transfer from Massachusetts arrived to Lorman prior to the 2020-21 athletic term.

In his first playing season for the Braves, the Golden Gate High alum finished second on the squad and eighth in the conference overall for total tackles (76). His 11 tackles for loss allowed him to finish 11th in the league in that department, while mixing in a pair of quarterback sacks along the way. He went on to record four quarterback pressures and a fumble recovery. He garnered the first double-digit tackles performance of his Alcorn career when he amassed 14 tackles (10 solo) at Southern. - Alcorn State Football

  Felix Harper threw two touchdown passes, Jayden Barfield forced and recovered a crucial fumble in the final minute, and Alcorn State held off Prairie View A&M 31-29 on Saturday. After trailing 9-7 in the second quarter, Alcorn State (6-4, 5-2 SWAC) broke out to a 31-9 lead. Harper began the scoring binge with a 57-yard pass to Lecharles Pringle and capped it off with a 12-yard strike to Tavarious Griffin early in the third quarter. Prairie View (7-2, 6-1) fought back with three touchdowns, two of them TD passes by Jawon Pass. After Pass connected with Trejon Spiller for a 70-yard score, Pass' two-point conversion pass fell incomplete and Alcorn State led 31-29 in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers got the ball back with 5:18 remaining and drove inside the 20-yard line of the Braves. On a third down play Barfield forced and recovered a fumble by Jaden Stewart at the 16-yard line with 18 seconds left. The play was reviewed and ruled a fumble recovered by the defense. Harper completed 18 of 28 passes for 263 yards and Pringle had four receptions for 119 yards. Pass completed 25 of 36 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns. During the game, Alcorn State staged a Hall of Fame salute to Steve McNair, a 2021 inductee to the College Football Hall of Fame.   Felix Harper threw three touchdown passes, two of them to CJ Bolar, and ran for another score and Alcorn State defeated Texas Southern 44-27 in a game delayed at the start by lightning on Saturday night. Harper was 23-of-31 passing for 211 yards and Bolar caught seven passes for 98 yards. Stadford Anderson added 90 yards rushing for the Braves (4-2, 3-0 SWAC). Alcorn State led 27-20 through three quarters and closed it out with a 17-point fourth quarter in which Harper threw for one touchdown and ran for a 16-yard score.   Felix Harper accounted for a touchdown through the air and on the ground and Niko Duffey ran for 138 yards and a late score to guide Alcorn State to a 24-12 victory over Mississippi Valley State in Southwestern Athletic Conference play on Saturday. Harper's 15-yard TD toss to LeCharles Pringle capped a 17-play, 75-yard drive that took 8:21 off the clock and gave Alcorn State (4-2, 3-0) a 7-0 lead after one quarter. Harper used a 14-play, 82-yard drive - capped by his 28-yard TD run - to put the Braves up 14-3 in the second period. Orlando Fernandez kicked a 40-yard field goal with 9 seconds left in the half to pull the Delta Devils (2-4, 1-2) within 14-6.

Noah Kiani's 24-yard field goal midway through the third quartter stretched the Braves' lead to 17-6. Fernandez followed with a pair of field goals to cut the MVSU deficit to 17-12 with 11:36 remaining in the game, but Duffey wrapped up the win with a 16-yard TD run with 3:36 left to play. Harper completed 15 of 25 passes for 145 yards and carried 10 times for 53 yards for the Braves. Duffey averaged 7.7 yards per carry on his 18 rushes.   LeCharles Pringle caught a pair of touchdown passes from Felix Harper as Alcorn State built an early lead and defeated Grambling 24-20 on Saturday. Harper was 15 of 23 for 150 yards passing for the Braves (3-2, 2-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) and gained another 23 yards on the ground including a 14-yard touchdown run. Pringle made touchdown catches of 45 and 13 yards, the first put Alcorn State up 7-0 and the latter made it 21-3 early in the second quarter. In between, Harper scored on a 14-yard keeper. Grambling (2-4, 1-2) freshman Noah Bodden, who threw for three touchdowns a week earlier, was limited to 10 of 27 passing for 105 yards with a TD and an interception. Aldon Clark came on late in relief and went 5-for-5 for 67 yards with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Greg White for the final score. Sklyer Perry went 23 of 38 for 316 yards and a touchdown for the Golden Lions (1-2), who led 26-7 at halftime.   Felix Harper scored on a 1-yard plunge to cap a 10-play, 92-yard fourth-quarter drive and Alcorn State rallied late to knock off Northwestern State in nonconference action on Saturday. The Braves' game-winning drive included a 50-yard completion on third-and-10 from Harper to Manny Jones to the Northwestern State 4-yard line. Harper ran it in on third-and-goal with 4:11 left to play. Alcorn State (1-1) managed only a 40-yard field goal by Cristofer Thompson in the first half.

The Demons (0-2) answered on the ensuing possession, scoring on Kaleb Fletcher's 18-yard scoring strike to Kendrick Price and taking a 7-3 lead into halftime. The Demons stretched their lead to 10-3 after three quarters on Eddie Godina's 37-yard field goal. Thompson pulled the Braves within 10-6 on 24-yard field goal 54 seconds into the final quarter. Harper completed 13 of 23 passes for 204 yards and ran for 27 on nine carries. Malcolm Magee picked off Fletcher to end Northwestern State's final drive.
